MBBS Abroad 2026 — Will Your Degree Actually Be Valid in India?

Most families compare brochures. The question that decides everything is narrower: does this university satisfy the NMC rules, and can you clear the exam at the end? Here is the compliance checklist, the pass-rate reality, and what 40 colleges across 4 countries charge.

Last updated 2026-08-28 · fees are indicative course totals for 2026-27 intake — confirm directly with the university before paying.

Start here, not with the fee. A foreign MBBS does not let you practise in India by itself. You must clear the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination, and in the December 2025 session only 23.9% of candidates passed — 29,327 graduates failed the June 2025 session. Choose a university that teaches well enough to get you through that exam, not the one with the lowest quoted fee.

The seven NMC rules that make or break the degree

These come from the Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations 2021, in force since 18 November 2021. Fail any single one and the degree cannot be registered in India — regardless of what you were promised or what you paid.

1. Course lengthAt least 54 months of medical study.
2. InternshipA further 12 months of internship, at the same institution that awarded the degree — it does not count inside the 54 months.
3. LanguageThe entire course, theory and practical, taught in English.
4. One institutionCourse and internship completed at the same university/hospital. Split programmes are a common reason degrees are rejected.
5. Local licenceThe degree must license you to practise medicine in that same country, on par with its own citizens.
6. NEETYou must have qualified NEET-UG before joining — no exceptions.
7. Screening testOn return you must clear FMGE, then complete a 12-month Compulsory Rotatory Medical Internship in India.
Graduates of the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and New Zealand are exempt from FMGE under the current rules. Every other country — including all four below — is not.
