TN 7.5% Government School Quota MBBS 2026

Community-wise closing ranks for every MBBS college in the 7.5% Government School Quota pool — and the eligibility rule that decides whether you are in this list at all.

Last updated 2026-08-26 · figures are from the published counselling documents named on this page.

The 7.5 per cent Government School Quota is the single biggest advantage a Tamil Nadu government-school student has in MBBS admission — and the one most families discover too late. It is not a relaxation applied to the general list. It is a separate merit list, drawn from a separate seat pool, and you are ranked only against other government-school candidates.

Who is eligible

You must have studied classes 6 to 12 continuously in a Government school in Tamil Nadu and passed the qualifying examination from that school, and you must qualify NEET UG. Students from government-aided, partially-aided, matriculation and private schools are not eligible — this is the point most applications fail on. Eligibility is certified by the head of the institution on the prescribed 7.5% certificate, which is verified at the time of counselling.

Why the closing ranks look so different

Because the competition pool is smaller, closing marks in the 7.5% list sit far below the general Government Quota list at the same college. A score that would not reach a government medical college on the general list can comfortably clear the same college under this quota. That is the whole point of the reservation, and it is why filling choices without knowing your quota is the most expensive mistake in the process.

Round 1 closing rank and marks, community-wise

Below is the Round 1 closing position for every MBBS college that admitted 7.5% candidates, by community. The rank shown is the rank within the 7.5% merit list, not the state general rank.

Reading this table. A blank cell means no candidate of that community was allotted that college in Round 1 — it does not mean the seat was unavailable. Seats unfilled in Round 1 flow into Round 2 and Round 3, and closing marks usually fall further in each later round.

How the 7.5% rounds run

The 7.5% pool is counselled alongside the general state quota, round by round. Seats surrendered by candidates who upgrade or withdraw are re-issued in the next round, so a college that closed high in Round 1 can reopen at a lower mark in Round 2 or Round 3. Candidates who are allotted and join are out of the running; candidates who are allotted and do not join forfeit as per the rules published for that round.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a separate application for the 7.5% quota?

No. You apply once to the Tamil Nadu MBBS/BDS counselling. You declare the 7.5% Government School Quota and upload the prescribed certificate signed by your school head. The Directorate of Medical Education then places you in the 7.5% merit list in addition to the general state merit list.

Can I be considered for both the 7.5% list and the general state list?

Yes. An eligible government-school candidate appears in both lists and is considered in both, which is why this quota only ever improves your position and never worsens it.

Does the 7.5% quota apply to All India Quota seats?

No. It is a Tamil Nadu state-quota reservation only. AIQ seats are allotted centrally by the Medical Counselling Committee, where the 7.5% Government School Quota does not exist.

Are 7.5% seats available in self-financing colleges too?

Yes. The 7.5% pool is carved out of the government quota seats, which exist in government colleges and in the government-quota share of self-financing colleges, so both appear in the allotment lists.

What happens to 7.5% seats nobody claims?

Unfilled 7.5% seats are reverted to the general government quota pool at the stage laid down in that year's counselling notification, after the 7.5% rounds are exhausted.
